Despite the countless effects that took a toll on Vietnam following French imperialism, many of these challenges that emerged were resolved after many years. However, some impacts still live on to today, specifically in regards to Vietnamese culture. One being the fact that Vietnamese stands as the official language in modern Vietnam, but almost all of the citizens speak French. Thus, portraying how harsh the enforcement of French customs were during this time of colonization. In addition, French architecture is seen on several buildings around Vietnam, especially on a major buildings in the city of Ho Chi Minh. Because France was well-known for providing high class education for citizens that are at the top of the social hierarchy in Vietnam, many wealthy Vietnamese people today go to France in order to receive this education. The most important legacy that lives on to today is the fact that Vietnam has a Communist government system. This was the type of government that was originally used by the French against the Vietnamese and, in turn, suppressed many attempted independence movements by the people of Vietnam. For example, in the 1930s several head leaders of the Vietnamese Communist Party were executed as well as almost the entire party being wiped out. Although this solely gives a glimpse of the harsh actions towards the Vietnamese by the French, it is ironic that the Vietnamese now hold this type of government in order to achieve centralized control over military, media, and the state. Thus, the Vietnamese have taken their heart-wrenching experiences of French imperialism and turned it into a region where they now have the power and influence.
