I would like to speak on the behalf of all of the Vietnamese citizens and myself because of the pain, suffering, and mistreatment we endured during the time of French colonization. Primarily, French imperialism entailed of detriment to the Vietnamese people, crop production, and government, and rather benefited and increased the profit of the French. In other words, the Vietnamese lost everything, including their independence while the French gained income and power out of it. Thus, we believe that French imperialism severely impacted us Vietnamese people and had a negative effect on our industries as well as our agriculture manufacturing.
Being an indigenous citizen during this time was exceedingly hard because we had no civil freedoms. The persecution of the native population proves to be an explanation in itself because we were never offered the liberty of being able to have an education, therefore, we were put so low in society we barely held a ranking. This social hierarchy had a lasting impact on the us Vietnamese because when it came time for us to expand and live on our own, there were very few people that were educated enough to aid their country with getting new resources through trade as well as the construction of new buildings. Air go, this lack of civil freedoms led to a harsh recovery from years of war and neglect from the French.
Another reason for putting an end to imperialism is the devastating agricultural impacts after French rule. Because the Vietnamese were excluded from modern economy sectors such as industry and trade, they did not have the capacity to develop and use these forms of trading and innovation when they were on their own. Also, the plantations, mines, enterprises, and businesses were all run by foreigners, showing that there were almost no indigenous people in Vietnam that were developed in the art of property-owning.
Lastly, we, the Vietnamese, argue that the French had a destructive influence on our government system, thus, Ho Chi Minh had to step forward and do everything in his power to help us recover from the time of French imperialism. It was during the time of the Resistance War that Ho Chi Minh gave us twelve recommendations; both things that were permitted and forbidden in order for us to succeed. These suggestions could be achieved through nationalism as long as we had a passion and love for our country. Also, unity allowed us to become 'one' and this coming together entailed of a balance between military men and intellectuals, businessmen, and agricultural workers. Therefore, we were the base and foundation for success in our country in the eyes of Ho Chi Minh; it was all up to us to recover from everything we lost during colonization.
In spite of all we, the Vietnamese, have encountered under French colonial rule, we believe that it is just and right that we receive a detailed and meaningful apology from the French. We ask for no more than that.
